Retired Cop Accused Of Exposing Self To Woman, Pointing Gun At Witness After On Subway Platform

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A retired NYPD officer was charged Wednesday night with exposing himself to a woman on a subway platform near Central Park, and pointing a gun at a passenger who tried to intervene.

The incident occurred Monday night on the southbound platform of the N and R subway lines at the Fifth Avenue/59th Street Station.

A 38-year-old woman told police she heard a hissing noise and when she looked to see what it was, the suspect exposed himself to her before walking away, police said.

A 41-year-old man saw the victim crying and asked her what was wrong. When she explained what happened, police said he followed the suspect and recorded video of him with his cellphone.

The suspect then pulled out a black handgun, pointed it at the man and told him to mind his own business before leaving the station, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Late Wednesday, Stephen Esposito, 56, of Staten Island was charged with menacing and public lewdness in the incident. Police confirmed to CBS2 that the suspect was a retired NYPD officer.
