De Blasio Assures New Yorkers 'We're On The Right Path' Amid Safety Concerns

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Five people were stabbed or slashed Wednesday during a violent morning in Manhattan.

The brawl broke out just before 6 a.m. on Amsterdam Avenue off West 171st Street at an underground social club.

Police said two hours later two suspects pistol-whipped and robbed three employees at the Rodeway Inn on West 71st Street, shocking neighbors in the area.

"Every time you turn around there's police. Some kind of thing going on here. And it's kind of scary cause it's such a quiet, beautiful neighborhood," Upper West Side resident Jackie Hashimoto told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez.

Mayor de Blasio said New Yorkers shouldn't feel unsafe, with statistics showing a drop in some violent crimes.

"The NYPD statistics are quite clear. Murders are down, shootings are down," he said.

Amy Barovick, who lives two doors down from the hotel that was robbed Wednesday, has a different impression.

"I wouldn't say crime is down. It feels like it's on the rise. I don't feel as safe as I did when Bloomberg was in office," she said.

"The bottom line is we're on the right path. Adding 2,000 more police officers on patrol. I'm convinced we're moving in the right direction," de Blasio said.

While some New Yorkers feel uneasy with recent reports of slashings and violent crimes, there are also a lot of people who say they're not concerned and feel the city is doing all it can.

"I don't know that they can do more without a lot more money put into it and a lot more time on their end," Upper West Side resident Emily Keener said.

"Everybody blames the mayor like he's not doing his thing. He's one man. The police are working. They've been working, constantly. They're doing their thing over here... like I said it's a safe city," Josh Martinez of Queens told CBS2.

While murders have gone down 30 percent this year compared to the same period last year, felony assaults have gone up 13 percent.
