NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --The Caribbean Tourism Organization is bringing the colors and customs of the Caribbean to New York City this week in a celebration of the culture.
Wednesday's Caribbean Fashion Show at Midtown's Arena is just one in long series of events during Caribbean Week. Rodney Powers, fashion show director, explained the show's place in Caribbean Week.
"The aim of Caribbean Week is to educate buyers and investors that there is more to the Caribbean than just sea and sand," he told CBSNewYork. "The Caribbean is filled with creativity and so much culture."
Members of the Caribbean community will be able to showcase that creativity with two separate series of events, which are designed to be aimed at consumers and the travel trade industry.
The fashion show, however, can be enjoyed by any guest.
"Viewers will be able to enjoy a world class fashion event," Powers said. "Live performances from some of the Caribbean's finest music."
Musical acts will include up-and-coming Barbadian performer Ria Borman and Bahamian musician Dash Davis. The designers—which include Jewel Shannon, Kuumba Designs, Kazz Forbes and Lucia Rodrigues —are putting together what Powers called a one-of-kind- show.
"Fashion is life, fashion is how we live," Powers said. "Caribbean designers are creative and can creative some of the most breath-taking pieces ever seen. We, as Caribbean people, have our own uniqueness in style and how we create."
The show will take place at 6:30 PM at The Arena at 35 W. 41st St. on Wednesday, June 8.
