Cop Who Made Tapes Accuses NYPD Of False Arrest

NEW YORK (AP) -- A New York City police officer says he was wrongly arrested by members of his precinct and taken against his will to a psychiatric hospital.

Adrian Schoolcraft has filed a $50 million lawsuit against the department and his superiors. He says they entered his home last Halloween and carted him off because he was planning to report them for wrongful activity. An officer in charge said it was for Schoolcraft's safety.

Schoolcraft has audio tapes he recorded that he says highlight a pattern of misconduct, such as downgrading crime to make the precinct seem safer.

The NYPD says the episode is still being investigated. The department stands by its figures and says it has officials devoted to assuring the fairness of the crime statistics.
