Commission Finds NYC Discriminated In Paying Female, Minority Managers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - A federal commission has found that New York City paid minorities and women administrative managers substantially less than their male counterparts.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Monday ordered the city to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in back pay and other damages.

The New York Times says the ruling was in response to a complaint filed against the administration of Michael Bloomberg on behalf of 1,000 administrative managers represented by Local 1180 of the Communications Workers of America.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio says the findings didn't prove that discrimination occurred. She says administrative managers hold a wide variety of positions with a broad range of salaries.

The Times says the finding will put pressure on the city to offer a settlement in the case.
