Columbia Wrestling Team Held Out Of Weekend Match Amid Texting Investigation
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Columbia University has launched an investigation after screenshots of exchanges -- allegedly between members of the school's wrestling team -- were published by a student news website.
The messages were laced with racist, sexist, and homophobic language and slurs.
PhD candidate Antonio told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman that it's unfortunately 'locker room talk.'
"I was a wrestler in high school and the culture of sports teams is almost inherently misogynistic. Generally there's this idea that to be masculine you have to demonstrate your disrespect, and so I'm disgusted, but I'm not surprised," he said.
Many students hope the university takes action, but say it's a bigger cultural problem and aren't sure what should be done.
The university is keeping the team home from a competition this weekend.
