Cheers, Boos Interrupt Conn. Senate Debate Between Murphy, McMahon
NEW LONDON, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Members of the crowd repeatedly hurled boos and erupted in cheers, as well as shouting and applause, during the third Connecticut U.S. Senate debate between Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy and Republican businesswoman Linda McMahon.
The interruptions took up so much time during the debate that McMahon's closing remarks were suddenly cut off during the live television broadcast Monday night.
Murphy maintained that he was interrupted more than McMahon, whose campaign brought busloads of young supporters to the Garde Arts Center in New London, Conn. He accused her of bringing people "to shout me down off the stage because she's afraid of debating the issues.'"
McMahon called the crowd lively and said they "seemed to be very supportive on both sides." She said she heard "some booing on both sides."
McMahon and Murphy for the seat that is set to be vacated by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.)
Murphy was elected to the U.S .House in 2006, after serving in the Connecticut state House of Representatives and Senate.
McMahon is the former chief executive officer of World Wrestling Entertainment. She ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) for Chris Dodd's old Senate in 2010.
