Celebrity Divorce Lawyer Dominic Barbara Charged With Trying To Extort Ex-Wife

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Well-known Long Island attorney Dominic Barbara was allegedly on the wrong side of the law Tuesday night.

Barbara, a celebrity divorce lawyer, was charged with trying to extort $200,000 from his ex-wife and her business partner. Nassau County prosecutors charged Barbara with harassment, stalking and attempted grand larceny.

The New York Daily News reported Barbara demanded $10,000 from his ex-wife numerous times, and when Leslie Barbara refused to hand over the money, Dominic Barbara raised his demand to $200,000 and began harassing her with calls and text messages.

Prosecutors said Dominic Barbara vowed to ruin his ex-wife's reputation by releasing sexually-explicit pictures and videos of her with other men, and even list her ex-lovers at a news conference, the Daily News reported.

Last year, Barbara's legal license was suspended for 18 months over sloppy building practices, the Daily News reported.

Dominic Barbara was also the subject of an investigation in Suffolk County a few months ago, for allegedly threatening a former client with mafia retribution. Former client Ray Young, Jr. said Barbara made threats over the phone.

"I don't want to disrespect any mobster, I don't want the mafia being mad at me, but you know, he's the one that's calling their names and saying he's going to send these guys over to me. He's going to send them over and whatever they do, beat me up, kill me," Young told WCBS 880's Irene Cornell.

Young said Dominic Barbara also threatened to send mobsters over to his home.

Dominic Barbara has represented actress Lindsay Lohan's father, Michael, as well as Joey Buttafuoco.
