NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Summer is not even over, yet Halloween is already causing an uproar.
A Halloween costume in particular.
Costume Super Center.com is selling a "Call Me Caitlyn" adult costume.
The costume mimics Caitlyn Jenner's Vanity Fair cover and is described as follows:
"Feel empowered while giving a nod to pop culture this Halloween when you dress up in the Call Me Caitlyn Adult Costume. This ensemble was inspired by the outfit worn by the newly named Caitlyn when she appeared in a revealing cover story for Vanity Fair magazine for their July 2015 issue. With this look you will receive shorts, a padded top, a pageant sash and a wig. The padded, form-fitting white top will give you a voluptuous chest, and has a corset-like design. The white short shorts finish off the simple look Caitlyn wore to the cover shoot. The woman that you're portraying will become apparent when you put on the included wig and sash, which reads, "Call Me Caitlyn" referring to the quote printed on the magazine's cover for that issue. You'll definitely stand out when you make a statement by dressing up in this awesome costume!"
The costume sells for $74.99.
Not everyone is pleased with the look. Several people took to Twitter to condemn the costume.
A Change.org petition was created targeting Spirit Halloween, another online retailer selling the costume.
Called, "Stop Exploiting Caitlyn Jenner with a Transphobic Costume," the petition has 2,300 signatures.
Spirit Halloween responded to critics last week and defended the costume.
"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," Spirit Halloween PR and marketing director, Trisha Lombardo, said in a statement to teh Huffington Post. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."
