Businessman Gets 4 Years For Police Corruption Scheme
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A businessman who bribed high-level police officials and tried to win favor with donations to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has been sentenced to four years in prison.
U.S. District Judge Gregory Woods also fined Jeremy Reichberg $50,000 on Monday.
Reichberg, 44, was convicted in January after a two-month trial.
Essentially, Reichberg bought and received favors and special perks for donors, monetizing his relationships with the police, including gaining special access to VIP parking at One Police Plaza.
Woods said Reichberg was the "idea man" behind the multi-year scheme that prosecutors described as an effort to use the NYPD like a private, paid police force.
The trial featured testimony by a prostitute. She said she was hired by a businessman associate of Reichberg in 2013 to entertain guests, including a police official on a private flight to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl.
A former NYPD deputy inspector was exonerated by the same jury that convicted Reichberg.
