Brooklyn Residents Audition To Perform National Anthem At Nets Playoff Games
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Brooklyn Nets have launched a search for the borough's best.
As CBS 2's Dave Carlin reported, the team needs 13 locals to perform a song we all know, but few can actually pull off. That song is the National Anthem.
On Monday, a Nets practice court at the Barclays Center became just like a jukebox with "The Star Spangled Banner" on repeat.
Dozens of singers and musicians auditioned to perform the anthem in a spotlight on Brooklyn's biggest stage for Nets playoff games.
The judges heard it so many times from men and women and boys and girls of all ages, but in so many different ways, they said it never got old.
Most sang the anthem, but at least one played it on a violin.
Waiting her turn was number 183, 9-year-old DianaMarie Paunetto of Gravesend.
The judges cut short her audition. Judges call her a future star but not quite ready for this.
But CBS 2 allowed Paunetto to give us the end of her song and finish strong, belting out the final line, "and the home of the brave."
"Maybe for some other people it might be tough, but for me it was medium," Paunetto said.
The main requirement aside from musical talent the person auditioning be from Brooklyn.
The hopefuls will hear back within two weeks if they will become Brooklyn's hometown stars for the home team.
Judges said of the 13 slots, as many as three people will be playing the National Anthem on instruments rather than singing it.
