Armed patient inside Brooklyn Methodist Hospital fatally shot by police
An armed patient who barricaded himself inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital was fatally shot by police on Thursday.
Police said the full incident was captured on body-worn cameras.
Patient, hospital security guard trapped in room with suspect
The NYPD said around 5:30 p.m., they received multiple 911 calls reporting a man with a sharp object had barricaded himself in a hospital room with other people. The callers also reported that the suspect had cut himself, was trying to cut others and had threatened to kill members of the hospital staff.
Officers arrived at the hospital a few minutes later and were sent to the eighth floor, where hospital staff pointed them to the room where the suspect was barricaded.
"When they got to the room, they saw blood all over the walls, floor, and splattered across the exterior of the door," said Charles Minch, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South.
Police said a patient in his 70s and a member of the hospital security team were trapped inside the room with the suspect.
According to police, the suspect came into the door frame and displayed a bloody weapon.
Suspect ignored repeated orders to drop weapon, NYPD says
NYPD officials said officers spent three minutes standing outside the door and telling the suspect to drop the weapon, but the man refused to cooperate and tried to close the door to the room multiple times.
The suspect then allegedly stepped towards the officers with the weapon, and officers deployed a Taser and a firearm at the same time, but the Taser was ineffective. It is unclear if the suspect was struck by a bullet.
Police said the suspect continued to try to close the door, and for another four minutes, officers tried to kick the door open and told the suspect to drop the weapon.
According to police, the suspect again advanced towards the officers with the weapon, and officers again deployed Tasers. When the Tasers were ineffective, police said officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released, but police say he was 62 years old.
Police said the suspect had been admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and it is unclear how he got the weapon, which was recovered at the scene. Investigators are trying to determine what exactly the weapon is.
Representatives for the hospital directed CBS News New York's inquiries to the NYPD.
The investigation is ongoing.
