8-Year-Old Boy Dies After Concrete Planter Falls On Him In Marine Park, Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An 8-year-old boy was killed Thursday when a freak accident turned fatal in Brooklyn.
The FDNY was called to 2224 Ryder St. in Marine Park, Brooklyn around 5:25 p.m.
Police said 8-year-old Kevin Reilly was climbing on a window cage at ground level, then tried climbing onto a concrete planter above, which was attached to the house. The planter gave way and fell on top of him.
As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, a heavy thud followed by screaming brought Rahjdul Kabir to his window.
"She was screaming, crying, at the same time asking for help, call 911," he said.
A mother was frantically trying to lift a heavy concrete planter off of her son.
"I saw her trying to lift something off of someone. So that must have been from the little boy," Kabir told CBS2's Andrea Grymes. "She had a hard time lifting it. By the time I could get down, two other gentlemen ran over to help."
"Help, help, oh my god, call 911," other neighbors recalled. "She was hysterical."
The boy was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island where he was pronounced dead.
The Kabirs live across the street and say they're heartbroken.
"My wife was crying literately a few minutes ago," the father said.
"I am, I'm still shaking. I couldn't believe it," his wife added.
"Sorry for the loss of words, but shocked," Kabir told Jones.
Neighbors told Grymes the boy has two sisters and the family just moved in less than a year ago.
"It's awful. I can't imagine what that mother and that family -- what a horrible, horrible tragedy," one woman said.
The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
The accident has neighbors with the same flower boxes, which can weigh hundreds of pounds, vowing to take them down.
