Brooklyn Arm Wrestling Event To Raise Money For Women's Group
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Hey ladies - you ready to rumble?
The Five Borough Ladies Arm Wrestling Organization, the newest spawn of the Collective of Lady Arm Wrestlers, will hold its first brawl at Williamsburg's Union Pool Sunday night.
The event, described by co-founder Kate McNeely as "incredibly loud and raucous" will feature 8 women with monikers like "Jackie O'Nasty" and "Bonnie Collide" going head to head, in an atmosphere she compared to that of underground fighting.
Eight female wrestlers, complete with costumes, back stories and theme music, pump up the crowd as the audience members can "bet" on their favorite by donating money to the group's selected charity.
All of the ladies arm-wrestling events across the country raise money for women and girls. This Sunday's event will support Safe Horizons, a Brooklyn organization which provides legal services for women who are victims of domestic abuse.
"Yes it's theater, yes it's a show, yes it's a raucous night, but it's also philanthropy," said the McNeely, who pointed to the significance of ladies showing off their strength to support women who need it to fight back against violence.
"Here we are celebrating the strength of women who came out of domestic abuse," McNeely said. "It's an accidentally, incredibly feminist event. We're redefining social norms on what it means to be female, what it means to be a lady."
