Brooklyn, Staten Island Day Care Workers Accused Of Bribery
NEW YORK (AP) -- Seven government employees and four service providers are charged with carrying out an $18 million fraud involving more than 30 day care centers in Brooklyn and on Staten Island.
The charges were contained in papers unveiled Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.
According to court papers, the child-care centers paid thousands of dollars in bribes to city officials to let them receive government funding for children who never attended the centers.
Authorities say the bribes also helped the centers operate without following proper codes.
