7 treated in Bronx carbon monoxide incident

More than half a dozen people had to be taken out of a home in the Bronx on Wednesday due to elevated levels of carbon monoxide.

Two victims are in serious condition, the FDNY says.

The FDNY says seven people were taken out of the home on Grant Avenue between East 164th and 165th streets around noon.

"Companies responded to a EMS run for a medical response," FDNY Assistant Chief Kevin Thomas said. "On arrival, they found high carbon monoxide levels throughout the building."

All victims were transported to Jacobi Hospital. The FDNY had no additional information on the ages of those hospitalized.

The FDNY said at this time, it's unclear if there were working carbon monoxide detectors in the three-story home.

"Our detectors went off when our guys went into the building," Thomas said. "That's what gave them the information that they had other issues they needed to address."

The FDNY says the elevated levels of carbon monoxide were due to a defective oil burner.

"They vented the building, shut off the utilities that were causing the problems, and addressed all those issues," Thomas said.

CBS News New York saw fire marshals taking pictures inside the home and speaking with a man who would not identify himself to us.

The street remained closed Wednesday afternoon as the investigation continued.
