The "first Thanksgiving" occurred in 1621 but it wasn't established as the fourth Thursday in November until President Roosevelt signed the resolution on Dec. 26, 1941. Still, the holiday has long been an established part of American culture. George Washington issued a proclamation naming Thursday, Nov. 1789 as a "Day of Publick Thanksgivin." Then in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a Proclamation that Thanksgiving would be regularly commemorated each year. What will you do this Thanksgiving? The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is perhaps the event that epitomizes Thanksgiving for Americans. To that end, don't miss out on your chance to see this New York staple live. The parade starts at 9 a.m., but many camp out as early as 6 a.m. in order to get the best view of all of the festivities. In its 88th year, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is the one Thanksgiving event in New York that must be done at least once.

The "First Thanksgiving" was a celebration by the Pilgrims and Wampanag people in 1621. This Thanksgiving, take a trip to the National Museum of the American Indian to learn more about the Wampanag and other Native Americans. The museum has a variety of exhibitions including the Infinity of Nations: Art and History in the Collections of the National Museum of the American Indian. This particular exhibition contains over 700 works of art by native peoples.
