Be A Part Of The New York City Marathon

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - So, you love the New York City marathon but you're not really a runner? We've got a way for you to be a part of the action!

Organizers of the NYC marathon are still trying to round up thousands of volunteers needed to make the race work.

WCBS 880's Marla Diamond says you won't get a medal at the end, but you may end up giving them out.

"This is not just a runner's race. It's a community event that really brings out the best of a lot of folks in all boroughs. It's huge. It's a spectacle that is unmatched," said volunteer organizer Phillip Santora.

Early risers can help out at the start in Staten Island, but the plum assignment is handing out the medals at the finish.

Santora says the majority of the 6,000 volunteers will be wearing ponchos and working at 26 water stations along the race. It doesn't sound glamorous, but some special moments have come out of those water stations.

"We have a station at mile 16 where people have come together, met at the water station, got married, have kids and now the whole family volunteers there," said Santora.

You can sign up to volunteer at the New York Road Runner's Club web site.
