Which 2016 candidates raised the most money?

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson raised the most money of the 2016 Republican presidential candidates, bringing in $20.2 million during the third fundraising quarter and outstripping his Republican rivals by millions.

Next in line are former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who raised $13.4 million and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who raised $12.2 million. Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina brought in $6.8 million, and Sen. Marco Rubio's campaign chose to highlight his frugal campaign spending - leaving him with $11 million cash on hand - rather than his $6 million haul during the third quarter.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich brought in $4.4 million during his first quarter as a presidential candidate, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie brought in $4.2 million during his. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, snagged just $2.5 million.

The picture doesn't look as good for Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, each of whom brought in less than $1 million (Jindal netted $579,438 and Gilmore brought in $105,807 in the third quarter).

The reports also shed some light on the problems that plagued former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, both of whom dropped out of the presidential race. Walker had spent $6.4 million of the $7.4 million he raised during the third quarter, a perilously high burn rate that left him with less than a million dollars in the bank. Perry had was also spending at a high rate, and had raised just $252,199 during the quarter before dropping out on Sept. 11. When he dropped out, he had just $44,554 in the bank.

The Republicans with the bank accounts in the best shape are Cruz, who has $13.5 cash on hand, Carson, who has $12 million and Rubio with $11 million.

In the Democratic field, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton raised $28.5 million and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, raised $26 million. Clinton has $32 million cash on hand and Sanders has $25 million.

Businessman Donald Trump has not yet announced how much money he raised.
