Deadly blazes
Parts of California are under a state of emergency because of an explosive and deadly wildfire. Crews are struggling to contain the Valley Fire, which has killed one person and destroyed at least 400 homes. It's one of 12 fires burning across the dry California landscape.

An attorney for Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses, says his client "wants to treat everyone equally, however her conscience does not allow her to." Davis was expected to return to work Monday, but her attorney told CBS News she wasn't sure what she hoped to do there.
Laser strikes
Laser strikes are set to hit a record high this year. Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport has seen the most with 139, but it's a nationwide problem. Five strikes were reported in the Cleveland area during the Labor Day weekend alone. Officials report more than 1,750 hits on planes recorded nationwide in just three months -- nearly half of what they saw in all of last year.
