President-elect Donald Trump is planning another day of transition talks. He released a short video on YouTube late Monday, laying out priorities for the start of his term. He promised to focus on creating jobs, but he didn’t mention repealing Obamacare or building a wall on the Mexican border, two of his most popular campaign promises.
Right vs. white
Richard Spencer is suddenly everywhere. Dozens of reporters attended his white nationalist confab in Washington, which he ended by shouting, “Hail the people! Hail victory!” to cheers and Nazi salutes. Will Rahn, who met Spencer before he was big news, looks at the actual intersection of white nationalism and the “Alt-Right,” and says Steve Bannon has some questions to answer.
Conflicts of interest?
Donald Trump has been adamant that his business will mean nothing to him as president, telling “60 Minutes” last week it was “peanuts compared to what we’re doing” in politics. But interactions with some foreign visitors, and his web of investments around the world could create unique conflicts of interest when it comes to the best interests of the United States.
Destroying Aleppo
President Bashar Assad is completing the destruction of his country’s largest city, with the help of Russia. Rebel-held eastern Aleppo is shuddering as bombs rain down. Between 200 and 300 people have been killed in the past week. Hospitals that were still functioning have now been hit, leaving nowhere to help the more than 200,000 residents, many of them already gravely hurt.
Real victim
Nicole Eramo, a former University of Virginia dean, won $3 million in a defamation lawsuit against Rolling Stone magazine and the author of a story called “A Rape on Campus.” The story was discredited, but not before it changed Eramo’s life. She says she feels vindicated, but not healed.
Behind the gap
American women continue to trail their male colleagues in pay, and it may come as a surprise that U.S. Census data show higher-paid women face a wider gender gap in compensation than those lower on the income ladder. So what are the highest paying jobs for men and women?
“The Daily Show”
An oral history documenting Jon Stewart’s nearly 17 years as “The Daily Show” host is out today. “The Daily Show: The Book,” written by Chris Smith, highlights the satirical political show’s rise with Stewart at the helm. In an interview with Charlie Rose, Stewart and Smith talk about the hit show’s evolution.
