Kylie's Kids: Meet Triathlete Aidan
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The thought of a triathlon is a little intimidating to most people, but not for this week's Kylie's Kid.
Aidan is 12-years-old and has mild cerebral palsy.
This year a kid's triathlon is just one of three races he finished. And, as he told WCCO's Kylie Bearse, the best part was getting to cross the finish line with his racing buddy.
"I tear up every time still when he crosses the finish line," Tracy, Aidan's mom, said. "He's smiling. He's proud of himself. He's tired. He's exhausted."
When Aidan was born at 24 weeks, his mom had no idea 12 years later he'd be running triathlons.
"Due to the prematurity, [he] has had some gait and balance issues," Tracy said.
Aidan has mild cerebral palsy, so everything takes a little extra energy
"The running was hard," Aidan said.
But it was a little easier with his racing buddy by his side.
"[He could] lend a helping hand to me when I got tired," Aidan said.
Reed is 18-years-old and ran three races with Aidan this year.
"It's kinda cool because he's a teenager and I've never raced with a teenager before," Aidan said.
Together they've finished a kid's triathlon, a Kiderod in the middle of February and a race called the "Resilinator."
"You get to go on the bubble slide and crawl under the army net," Aidan said.
Just like Aidan's shirt says - he's got this.
"It feels good because other people can't do the races," Aidan said.
"A lot of people with cerebral palsy would be like, 'I can't race,'" Reed said. "But Aidan just does not let anything stop him from doing what he wants to do. He's a really cool guy, never gives up and it's incredible."
Reed is heading to Purdue this fall to study engineering. But he said he'll be helping Aidan find a new racing buddy.
