Careless Smoking Caused Fire That Killed Edina Woman

EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) -- Officials say the fire that killed a woman in December was caused by careless smoking.

The fire happened at 7209 Lanham Lane on Dec. 14, 2010.

Anita Delegard, 74, died in the fire. Her husband, Duane, 74, was able to jump to safety from a second-story window. The couple was married for 51 years.

Anita was in the basement when she died. Firefighters weren't able to get into the home for a while because it was fully engulfed and too hot to enter.

After Duane jumped to safety, he ran barefoot to a neighbor's house and called 911. Duane suffered smoke inhalation but was treated and released the same day.
