The McHenry County Sheriff's Office said six others were evaluated and released at the scene.
Illinois State Police troopers responded to northbound I-55 near Lorenzo Road in Will County just before 8:30 a.m. for the crash involving two commercial vehicles and three passenger vehicles.
The semi truck was carrying about 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia when it was involved in the multi-vehicle crash.
The accident happened around 5 p.m. on Saturday near 122nd Street and Torrence Avenue.
"(I said) you gotta stay alive, you gotta stay with me. And I started praying over him, I'm not going to lie, because that's what my momma taught me."
ISP troopers responded to a report of a multi-unit motor crash on I-90 eastbound on Route 83.
A wrong-way driver who caused the crash was also killed.
