Polices said the man swung the axe at the security guard and slashed him in the leg, and the security guard shot the man in self-defense. CBS 2's Steven Graves reports.
The crash happened in the busy intersection of 63rd and Halsted streets.
A 28-year-old man was driving a GMC north on Halsted when he ran the red light at 63rd Street and hit a Honda driven by a 54-year-old woman, police said.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
