A total of 38 people were injured, and 23 of them were taken to hospitals. CBS 2's Noel Brennan reports.
The suspect fled and was later arrested in the 0-100 block of North Dearborn.
Police said a suspicious object found in the 5600 block of North Broadway was deemed to be a hoax.
Police said the bus was headed north on Ashland Avenue around 12:30 p.m., when another vehicle swerved into its lane, and the bus crashed into a light pole.
Police say the man walked onto the elevated tracks at Sheridan and then southbound on the tracks all the way to the Addison Red Line station.
More than 800 drivers have been hired this year, and the the hiring will continue into next year.
Police said the offenders approached the victim before beating and choking him, taking his personal belongings, and fleeing the scene.
"This is nice to have some good news come out, and I think the last couple months have just been rough for CTA riders," said DePaul University professor Joe Schwieterman, an expert on mass transit and public planning.
Police said the 21-year-old then stabbed the other woman in the head and arm with something sharp.
The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
An Illinois State Police trooper intiated a traffic stop on the Dan Ryan near 95th Street, but during the stop the occupant of the vehicle got out and fled on foot.
That section has been closed since late July as part of a massive rebuild project - forcing passengers to take buses around the stop.
Chicago Fire Department officials confirmed one person was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital after a shooting near 47th and Archer.
A CTA bus supervisor was wounded in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the Archer Heights neighborhood. Police said the 55-year-old man and others were standing outside a CTA bus near 47th and Archer around 1:50 p.m., when a passenger in another vehicle began shooting in their direction. The man was shot in the right thigh, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
Free shuttle service will be available between the Medical District and Jackson Station.
It happened near the Midway Orange Line stop Tuesday morning.
