The fire was contained to one unit on the 12th floor of the 14-story building, the Fire Department said.
Helen Chambers said the situation is so bad that her grandson is taking the battery out of her vehicle after she parks.
"Every time I see these young people, I'm inspired. I try not to show tears in front of them because they would be tears of joy."

The fire was on the seventh floor of the nine-story high-rise but has been extinguished, officials said.
Critics of the deal have said CHA land should be used only for creating affordable housing.
The Chicago Fire Football Club is officially moving it's training facility to the Near West Side, after signing a lease with the Chicago Housing Authority to build the $80 million complex on CHA land.
Community groups gathered to propose the new school be built on a vacant site at 17th and Canal streets in East Pilsen.

First, the pipes burst at a Chicago Housing Authority high-rise – sending water everywhere. Now, the seniors who live there say the heat went out, leaving them to resort to dangerous measures to stay warm.
On Tuesday night, the residents told CBS 2’s Jermont Terry the conditions in the building are horrible.

The group is working with the Chicago Housing Authority to give away 5,000 coats to children and families living in public housing.
The woman spent about a year and a half in different shelters after higher rent forced her out.
The CHA wants to set them up for success by providing linens, towels and other essentials.
