New England Patriots lose Super Bowl LX, 29-13, after woeful offensive performance

The Seattle Seahawks dominated Super Bowl LX and ended a dream season for the New England Patriots.

New England struggled all game long offensively, losing 29-13.

  • After the first quarter, the defenses were dominating. Seattle drove for an early field goal, but after the opening frame it was 3-0 Seahawks. 
  • Jason Myers hit two more field goals in the second quarter and the Seahawks headed into halftime with a 9-0 lead as the Patriots offense struggled.
  • New England gained just one first down in the third quarter, its first since the opening frame. After three quarters, Seattle is holding a 12-0 lead.
  • Drake Maye had fourth quarter touchdowns to Mack Hollins and Rhamondre Stevenson, but it was too late as Seattle earned the win.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked for his message to his players after the loss.

"I reminded them that we are 307 days into what hopefully is a long, successful relationship and program and that it's OK to be disappointed," Vrabel said. "We have to be disappointed and upset together. I'm appreciative of them, thankful, grateful that I get to coach them."

Patriots' Kyle Williams chased down fan on field

Earlier in the night when a fan ran on the field, the moment wasn't shown on the broadcast.

But fans in the stands captured cellphone video and a Getty photographer snapped a photo showing that it was Patriots rookie wide receiver Kyle Williams who helped chase down the unruly fan.

Drake Maye dejected after Super Bowl loss

Drake Maye spoke to reporters after the loss.

"I think that's the biggest thing about life is you're going to have times like this. It's how you bounce back. I think a lot of those guys in that locker room, they're going to use this as fuel," Maye said. "I think I would go to war with those guys any time, any day, anywhere. It's motivation to get back here and not have this feeling, and have what they're feeling out there."

Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker was named Super Bowl MVP.

Walker rushed for 135 yards and also had two catches for 26 yards.

Often the Super Bowl MVP goes to the winning quarterback, but Sam Darnold had just 202 yards and a touchdown.

Drake Maye ended the game 27 of 48 for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns. But he also had two interceptions and two fumbles.

With 2:21 to play, Drake Maye scrambled and threw a low pass that running back Rhamondre Stevenson scooped off the turf. He scampered in for a wide open 7-yard touchdown.

The 2-point conversion was no good as Hunter Henry took a big hit and the ball fell incomplete.

The Patriots trail 29-13.

Drake Maye was sacked two more times with the Patriots trailing by 15 points, including one that sealed the game.

Maye lost the football for a second fumble in the game. This time Uchenna Nwosu scooped up the ball and ran it back for a touchdown that gave Seattle a 29-7 lead with 4:27 to play.

The seventh sack of Maye set a Super Bowl record.

Drake Maye throws critical interception

Just when it looked like the Patriots were gaining some momentum, Seattle brought it to a screeching halt.

Drake Maye missed a wide open Austin Hooper on first down.

The Patriots got 13 yards on a screen to Rhamondre Stevenson, followed by a long try to Mack Hollins that was into triple coverage and incomplete.

On third down, Maye dropped back to pass, felt pressure and scrambled up the middle for 16 yards.

The clock had ticked under nine minutes with the Patriots approaching midfield.

Maye ripped a deep ball that sailed over his receiver's head and was intercepted by Julian Love with 8:48 to play.

The Seahawks have already moved the ball into field goal range.

A quick Seattle drive gives the Patriots the ball back with a chance to chip away at the Seahawks' lead.

Sam Darnold uncorked a bomb looking for speedy Rashid Shaheed on third down. Shaheed had a step on Carlton Davis, but the pass was incomplete.

New England took over with 10:40 to play, but pinned at its own 4-yard line.

Drake Maye hit Mack Hollins on a 24-yard pass, then a play later the two connected once again for a 35-yard touchdown down the left sideline.

Stefon Diggs was the victim of a late hit out of bounds. Cornerback Josh Jobe hit Diggs, who ran after him and grabbed the defender.

It appeared Jobe then threw a punch at Diggs.

After avoiding disaster two plays earlier, Drake Maye wasn't as lucky on 3rd and 5 as he was sacked and lost the football.

Seattle took over at the New England 37, and the Seahawks are on the brink of putting the game out of reach.

Defensive lineman Milton Williams manhandled his blocker on first down, sacking Sam Darnold at his own 10-yard line for a loss of eight.

Seattle managed a short gain on second down. On 3rd and 14, the Seahawks gave the ball to running back Kenneth Walker up the middle, essentially choosing to give possession to the struggling Patriots offense.

Marcus Jones fielded the punt and ran it into Seattle territory. But a block in the back penalty on Dell Pettus negated the return, and New England starts at its own 27 desperately needing a spark.

Drake Maye was 6 for 11 for 48 yards and was sacked three times, losing 30 yards.

Smith has been the referee for two Patriots games this season, and New England won both times. He was the referee for the team's Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants and also the divisional round of the playoffs against the Houston Texans.

Mike Vrabel's final inspirational message for Patriots

Before the Patriots left for Levi's Stadium, head coach Mike Vrabel reportedly had one final message for his players.

According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, Vrabel opened his Sunday team meeting playing "Beautiful Day" by U2, which was played at halftime of Super Bowl XXXVI as the Patriots stunned the Rams. That game was played months after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, and the band displayed the victims' names behind them during their performance.

Vrabel was a player in the game. According to Breer, he told the current Patriots that it was a beautiful day for he and his teammates because no one expected them to win, much like this year's team. The NFL insider said Vrabel's final plan for Super Bowl Sunday was "Belief, identity, rage."

The Patriots and Seahawks have both designated a celebrity to introduce them at the start of the Super Bowl.

Jon Bon Jovi will handle the task for the Patriots, while Chris Pratt will do the same for the Seahawks.

Bon Jovi has long been a staple at Patriots games and practices, and his song "This is Our House" is played after touchdowns at Gillette Stadium.

Drake Maye to become youngest QB to start Super Bowl since Dan Marino

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, in his second year and first full year starting for New England, is set to become the second-youngest quarterback to ever start a Super Bowl.

Maye, who turned 23 years old in August, will be just 35 days older than Marino was when he reached Super Bowl XIX in 1985. Marino and the Dolphins lost the the 49ers that year.

If the Patriots win, he would become the youngest quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl.

New England enters Super Bowl LX hoping to make NFL history.

The Patriots enter the game tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl wins with six apiece. A win over Seattle would leave New England sitting alone in NFL history with seven championships.

In addition, the Patriots already have the most Super Bowl appearances in league history, with Sunday marking the team's 12th time playing at this stage.
