Meet The North Texas Teacher Who Cancelled Homework

GODLEY (CBS11) - No more blaming your dog for eating your homework in one North Texas classroom. That's because one teacher says this year she won't be assigning any.

Brandy Young is a second-grade teacher at Godley Elementary.

Young recently sent a letter home with her students informing their parents of her decision and why she is doing away with homework.

Instead of assigning homework, Young is asking parents to spend quality time with their child eating dinner, reading books, and doing leisurely activity.

That letter was posted to social media and went going viral.

"I'm thrilled that this is a conversation that we are having," said Young. "We're trying to be innovators here and develop the whole child. I am not so much focused on them pushing paper when a child goes home."

Young says the classwork is usually sufficient for her second-graders.

"Younger elementary students don't need pencil and paper work after they leave the classroom. I am checking for mastery in here. I know what my kids know and I know what they can," said Young.
