Cardinals 19, Cowboys 13: My Top 10 CBS Contemplations
10. Flat out, I thought the Cowboys would win this game. I predicted "another scary, nail-biting walk-off win" on the pre-game show on 105.3 The Fan. Though I warned all week about Kevin Kolb making the Cardinals much more dangerous than John Skelton and though I reminded that things always get dizzy in the desert when the Cowboys visit Arizona, I was wrong.
9. Orlando Scandrick is a damn fool. He's cocky. He's condescending. And he's just plain stupid. Last game he claimed Dolphins' receiver Davone Bess was better than Wes Welker. After Sunday's game he claimed his innocence despite a clear block-in-the-back penalty on Dez Bryant's punt return that would've set up Dallas at Arizona's 25 late in the game. And, no, raising your hands doesn't negate the foul you're committing. Asked Scandrick incredulously afterward, "What am I supposed to do? Next time I'll just turn around and stop." Sounds good to me.
8. Cardinals played eight men in the box in an attempt to take away DeMarco Murray, and I'll be damned if it didn't work. Murray finished with only 12 carries for 38 yards. Was it just me or was Felix Jones hitting holes harder?
7. Fox sideline waste of time reporter Jennifer Hale actually claimed Jason Garrett told her he was "extremely proud of his team's effort" at halftime. Tony Siragusa, all is forgiven.
6. Rob Ryan's defense has been over-achieving all season, but in the last three weeks they've made stars of Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Marshall and Andre Roberts. Marshall is understandable, but the other two?
5. I didn't see Dallas losing if it contained Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson. Peterson had 1 return yard and Fitzgerald only four catches for 55 yards. Neither scored, and yet somehow the Cowboys lost.
4. We've praised Sean Lee all season, but Larod Stephens-Howling was his assignment on the game-winning, 52-yard screen pass in overtime. Of course it would've helped had Anthony Spencer not simply flown by Kevin Kolb on a wild, hapless rush.
3. At the 31-yard line and with: 26 remaining at Arizona, the Cowboys ran the clock down and tried a 49-yard field goal. At the 30-yard line and with: 20 remaining at the Giants, the Packers ran a play and completed an 18-yard pass to set up a 31-yard field goal. And now you know why Green Bay is 12-0 and the Cowboys are 7-5.
2. Have no idea why the Cowboys called timeout before Bailey lined up for his potential game-winning field goal. And be clear on this: kicking coach Chris Boniol and special teams coach Joe DeCamillis were both approaching Garrett to make the call. Remember, Arizona's Calais Campbell has blocked three field goals this season. But Garrett said the play clock was winding down and that some of his players were just settling in. Sorry, but that ain't true. With all players lined up and holder Mat McBriar looking back at Bailey for the green light there was still: 06 on the play clock. Still, this "we iced our own kicker!" is silly. The whistle blew so early that anyone with a shred of common sense knew it wasn't an official play. None of the Cardinals rushed. Jason Witten stood up and was walking toward the sideline was L.P. Ladouceur snapped the ball. Sure Bailey's kick went through the uprights, but it was so obvious that it didn't count that the two referees didn't even bother to signal it good. If you're a fan who thinks that timeout cost the Cowboys the game, you also probably cheer when Dirk Nowitzki walks toward the bench and sinks a practice jumper after Rick Carlisle calls a timeout or claims it should be a strike when the umpire calls time and steps from behind the catcher only to watch C.J. Wilson continue his motion and lob a strike.
1. Garrett has lot of 'splaining to do. Against Miami on Thanksgiving the Cowboys reached the 29 and then ran three more plays, with Murray running for 16 precious yards to set up Bailey's game-winning chip shot. But for some reason on Sunday reaching Arizona's 31 was far enough? Does not compute. Owning two timeouts, clocking the ball makes zero sense. The Cowboys wasted 19 seconds after Dez Bryant's second attempt to be a hero. Dumb move, especially considering the 49-yard attempt would follow a missed 53-yard attempt by Bailey and a 50-yarder pinballed in off an upright. And especially considering Murray has only been tackled for a loss on 12 of 159 handoffs this season. Fearing a "negative play" just doesn't sound right. Dallas was perfect on its last drive against Miami, but yesterday was an abortion.
