Alicia Garza on the origin of Black Lives Matter

Oakland-based activist Alicia Garza coined the phrase "Black Lives Matter" in 2013, the day George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murdering 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Soon a hashtag was created, and a movement was born. Garza talks with journalist Mark Whitaker about her new book, "The Purpose of Power," and her education in activism; the inequities of America's criminal justice system; and why social change is built not on social media hashtags but on people.

Trayvon Martin's mother: "I chose to live"

Two and a half years before Ferguson, the shooting death of Trayvon Martin was a call to action for many people. The unarmed 17-year-old was shot and killed in 2012 by George Zimmerman, who claimed he was attacked and fired in self-defense. Now Trayvon Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, have teamed up with Jay-Z on the new six-part docuseries called "Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story." It chronicles Trayvon's death and the protest movement that emerged afterward. Gayle King spoke with Sybrina Fulton about Trayvon's death and the launch of a movement.

"Rest in Power": Story of Trayvon Martin

The police shooting of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin created a national outcry. It led to the Black Lives Matter movement and the backlash against it. A new documentary series, "Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story," tracks the long-lasting consequences of that night. Trayvon Martin's father, Tracy Martin, along with filmmakers Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, join "CBS This Morning" to discuss how so much has changed in the nation since then, but so much has remained the same. "Rest in Power" premieres Monday, July 30 on Paramount Network and BET.
