Experience of Trump's intel chief questioned

President Trump is backing Rep. John Ratcliffe of Texas to replace Dan Coats as director of national intelligence. The director of national intelligence requires extensive "national security expertise," but colleagues of both parties say Ratcliffe has shown less zeal for the day-to-day work of intelligence oversight, according to public records, committee members and other officials familiar with his work. CBS News' Olivia Gazis joins CBSN's "Red and Blue" to discuss her reporting.

GOP considers next move on gun control

For the first time, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is suggesting he's open to new laws requiring background checks on all gun buyers. This comes in the aftermath of the deadly El Paso and Dayton shootings last weekend. McConnell says gun control legislation will be considered next month, after the Senate's August recess. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked President Trump on Thursday to use his constitutional authority to force the Senate back into session immediately – but it’s unlikely that he’ll do so. Ben Tracy reports.
