Retired Greensburg Pediatrician Honored For Life's Work
ARLINGTON, Va. (KDKA) -- A pediatrician from Greensburg got one of the nation's highest honors.
Dr. Pascal Spino received the Citizen Service Before Self Honor for this lifetime work with children and saving thousands of lives. He often didn't charge patients who could not afford medical care.
The award is given to ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
More than 200 people were nominated for the award, but only three received it.
"He broke into tears when he found out he won the award, because he did not work so hard for any gain other than the health of the children," Dominic Spino, Dr. Spino's son, said.
Because of Dr. Spino's age, he couldn't attend the ceremony Friday at Arlington National Cemetery, but his son received it on his behalf.
