Pittsburgh could see 8-14 inches of snow this weekend. Here's the latest on the winter storm.

Pittsburgh is waiting for a winter storm that has the potential to bring the most snow the region has seen in years.

Winter storm warnings are in place from New Mexico to Massachusetts. That is roughly 2,000 miles of a winter storm warning for this one storm. The entire Pittsburgh area is under a winter storm warning from 7 p.m. Saturday to noon Monday.

How much snow will Pittsburgh get?

When all is said and done, the Pittsburgh area is looking at accumulations that largely range from 8 to 14 inches across the area.

It is important to remember that storms like this can produce higher and lesser amounts in isolated locations, but a general 8 to 14 inches is anticipated. Some snow totals south of Interstate 70 may be held back by a push of warm air. This would set up sleet (ice pellets) that would squash the accumulations down a bit. That will not be enough to lessen the travel concerns, however.

When will the snow start?

Snow showers will begin late Saturday night. Those first flakes will have some dry, very cold air to overcome, so initially the snow will be light.

The heaviest snowfall will likely hang out during the daytime on Sunday. This is where we will see the most intense snow bands inside the storm, and quickly accumulating snow. As quickly as that snow accumulates, the roads will deteriorate as quickly. Travel is expected to be difficult and is not recommended.

Sunday night, the snow will start to taper. While the main system will be out of here by early Monday morning, scattered snow showers will linger on Monday. This will be followed up by another batch of brutally cold air.

Windchills to reach -10 degrees

To get to the snow information, we did skip over the brutally cold wind chills expected on Saturday. There is a cold weather advisory that is in place for wind chills that could get colder than -10 degrees.
