Cloudy in Philadelphia Thursday with chance for afternoon rain, tracking weekend snow
Thursday will be cloudy and cool thanks to a breeze from the east. Showers will develop by late afternoon/evening, especially to the south, where some steadier rain is possible for Delaware and far into South Jersey.
Bring the umbrellas along when you head out so you don't get caught in the rain later on — and keep it handy for tomorrow morning.
High temperatures Thursday will be in the low 40s.
NEXT big weather changes
Periods of steady rain Friday morning will lead to a slow and inconvenient morning drive, which has prompted a short NEXT Weather Alert from 4:30–10 a.m. tomorrow. The Poconos may see 1 inch of snow and a few tenths of an inch of ice, leading to hazardous roads.
Some sun returns Saturday with a high near 50 and then another big change. A coastal low will develop Sunday, coinciding with the return of colder air.
What we know:
There will be a coastal storm Sunday, and colder air will arrive as it forms.
What we need to determine:
The position of the low relative to the coast. If the low forms close to the coast and throws moisture into our area Sunday night, with surface temps below freezing, we could be looking at some significant snow. The GFS model continues to stick to this scenario consistently in each run. At the same time, the EURO model keeps the center of the low well southeast, meaning we just tap into barely enough moisture for rain and snow showers, with light accumulations at most.
Once the storm tomorrow morning moves through, we can better assess the formation and track of the potential Sunday snow, but should prep for the worst while hoping for the best — whether snow constitutes "worst" or "best" is up to your own personal interpretation.
