Police: Teen Shot Following Accidental Shooting In Germantown

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Police say a 14-year-old girl was shot inside a home in East Germantown as she and a group of friends played with a gun.

The victim suffered from a gunshot wound to her left and hand and chest. Police believe the bullet struck her hand before hitting her in the chest. She was transported to Einstein Hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.

Officials say the girl originally claimed she was shot on the highway by an unknown person. After speaking with investigators, she later recanted that story.

An investigation determined that the shooting took place inside a home on the 5600 block of Bloyd Street.

Police tell Eyewitness News they recovered the handgun and a rifle on a nearby roof.

Last week, the community mourned the loss of a teen for a similar incident. That time, a 13-year-old was killed after a group of teens found a gun and began playing with it.

Officials are still on the scene and at the hospital where family members are being questioned.

Following multiple accidental shootings, officials have issued a word of advice to gun carrying residents.

"If you have a gun in a house and you have young adults and teenagers in the house, that gun should be unloaded, it should be put in a safe, and in additional precaution you should have some sort of trigger locking device."

Officials are still searching for the other kids who were with the victim at the time of the shooting.
