Cold and rainy weather in Philadelphia Monday, showers to linger throughout the afternoon

While it's not a severe-weather kind of morning, it's definitely an umbrella alert Monday. A light NEXT Weather Alert is in effect through noon to remind you to keep it slow on the roads as rain falls throughout the day.

An unsettled weather pattern continues as we head into the new week as an area of low pressure rain, increasing in intensity through midday, with the heaviest across south Jersey and Delaware.

No severe weather is expected but roads will be wet and that usually means slower drive times and more accidents. This is however largely beneficial rain for south Jersey and Delaware in light of the recent drought.

Another impact on Monday will be the temperatures. We will only reach the mid and upper 40s, which is 15 degrees below average. That last time we spent a day in the 40s was way back on March 3.

The chill will last through Wednesday with overnight lows near freezing each night. Not only will temperatures be chilly, but it'll also be windy through the day on Tuesday with wind gusts up to 35 mph. This wind will keep feels-like temperatures in the 30s all day Tuesday.

Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, winds will decrease slightly, but it'll still make temperatures around 30 degrees feel more like the low 20s to start the day.

By next Friday temperatures recover to the upper 50s just in time for another round of rain that will extend into the weekend.

There is some good news with all this rain, the drought conditions across our area have improved.

We still have an extreme drought over part of South Jersey, but that area is much smaller than in early January. And we are quickly making up for our rainfall deficit with 9.46 inches having fallen since January 1. That's just 0.99 inches below our average on today's date of 10.45 inches.
