Yankees' Jeter Out With Stiff Calf; Martin, Swisher Ailing

TAMPA, Fla. (WFAN/AP) — Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will be out possibly until Tuesday because of a stiff left calf.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced the news before Friday's spring training game against Washington.

Jeter spent spent time on the disabled list last season with a right calf injury.

"My alarm was: he hurt his calf last year. And even though it is the other calf, we are going to be smart about this," Girardi said. "I told him, 'Don't even go outside today.' I think he could hit or take (batting practice), but just let it calm down."

Jeter could return Tuesday, Girardi said.

"I tried to prep him before I told him," the manager said. "I said, 'Remember what happened last year first.' "

Others sitting out the game with the Nationals because of injuries include catcher Russell Martin and outfielder Nick Swisher — both with groin injuries. Swisher could play Saturday. Martin will miss at least a couple days.

Pitcher Freddy Garcia has a bruised right hand. He is expected to miss his next scheduled start in a minor league game Monday.
