Woman Dead, Man Injured In Newark Playground Shooting

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Newark police on Wednesday were investigating a shooting on a playground, which left a 24-year-old woman dead and a man wounded.

Police responded around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to the area of 400 Hawthorne Ave. in Newark, upon a call of a shooting. The victims were found lying wounded on the playground, and were rushed to University Hospital in Newark, police and Essex County prosecutors said.

Dejaa Edwards, 24, of Newark, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

The second victim, a 30-year-old man from Newark, was reported in "stable" condition, authorities said.

The shooting was under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force Wednesday afternoon. Prosecutors believe the victims were targeted.
