UNION CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Three police officers were struck as two motorcycles barreled through an earlier accident scene in Union City, New Jersey Wednesday evening.
As CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported, the scene remained active at 11 p.m. as police investigated.
It started around 7:30 p.m. at Palisades Avenue and 30th Street, when a 16-year-old boy was struck by a garbage truck, authorities said. The teenager was killed in the crash, authorities said.
He might have been walking or on a bicycle.
While police were investigating the incident, the motorcyclists drove through the accident scene at 9 p.m., authorities said. The New Jersey State Patrolmen's Benevolent Association said three officers said three officers were struck.
Two motorcycles were involved, police said. One the motorcyclists escaped, while the other crashed at the scene, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's office.
The motorcyclist who crashed was hospitalized and was expected to survive, prosecutors said.
"They just completely brushed through, and it was insane, because they were I think trying to take this person's body out of this garbage truck, and then this happened, and they had to immediately respond to that, and it was just so crazy to like watch as it happened," said witness Christian Ugaz.
"They came out unexpectedly, and they just crashed into the police officers at the scene," said witness Angel Solorzano. "I saw like three victims on the floor."
The PBA said officers were taken to hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately learned, but they are expected to survive.
Union City police and the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office were on scene investigating late Wednesday.
