Trade Revis? Woody Says Jets 'Open' To Listening To Offers
PHOENIX (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York Jets owner Woody Johnson says the team is open to listening to trade offers for Darrelle Revis, but adds that the star cornerback is not being shopped around.
Johnson told reporters at the NFL meetings Sunday that the Jets would like to keep Revis, the subject of rampant trade rumors, "but we're trying to make the team better. He's on the team right now."
"No team is just one player away maybe with the exception of the quarterback," said Johnson. "You can't be distracted by one player. You have to look at everything."
There has been intense speculation during the past several weeks that the Jets will try to deal Revis, recovering from a torn knee ligament and has one year remaining on his contract.
"We would be open to a conversation," Johnson said. "But we're not actively out there beating the bushes, because he's on the team and we expect him to be on the team. ... We fully expect him to be up to the Revis Island that we've all known and loved."
Revis will be looking to land a mega-bucks contract after this season. Johnson said the reports that he's reluctant to pay his best player have been "patently untrue" and exaggerated.
"The lines of communication are open," he said. "If (general manager John Idzik) believes an extension would be acceptable to the team and make the team better, then we would do it."
The Jets owner also expressed belief in quarterback Mark Sanchez turning a corner, and said the team is "looking at all possibilities" with backup Tim Tebow.
"We'll see what the offseason bares," said Johnson.
