The Next Elite Athlete: Gymnast Arinn Wade

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Olympics may have just ended, but the next generation of Olympians is hard at work training for the competition.

TV 10-55's Lisa Kerney had the chance to meet a 15-year-old elite gymnast who has his sights set on the 2016 games.

Arinn Wade, 15, is one of 7 children. He started his athletic journey in karate. But when he was 7-years-old, he found a new passion when his karate instructor challenged him to a handstand contest.

Arinn lost the first one. But before the following week, he practiced. And by the end of that week, he was walking back from the living room to the kitchen, on his hands.

"Ever since then, I wanted to do gymnastics," he said.

Not only does he do gymnastics – he dominates. He's been a state champion, a regional champion. He's also been a national champion on the pommel horse - all while maintaining a high GPA and taking AP courses at school.

He has his sights set on the Olympics.

Check out Lisa's full interview with Arinn Wade and his family.
