Staten Island shipyard explosion, fire leaves 1 dead, over 30 hurt
One person has died and over 30 people have been hurt in an explosion and fire on a barge at a Staten Island shipyard Friday in New York City.
The person who died was a civilian, according to officials.
One fire marshal is in critical condition, and one firefighter is in serious condition, officials said.
At least 11 other firefighters and two EMS personnel were also hurt.
All have been rushed to area hospitals.
The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time Friday on a barge at the shipyard, which is located on Richmond Terrace between Lockman and Andros Avenues.
The fire quickly grew to two alarms, and an explosion rang out at around 4:20 p.m.
Hazmat, Department of Buildings and the Department of Environmental Protection have all been called to the scene.
Officials say people in the area should expect traffic delays and road closures.
"I was coming down Richmond Terrace towards my house, and as I was driving close to this area right here, I heard an explosion, and I kind of jumped," one area resident said. "I didn't see any fire, but I did hear the explosion."
