Slumping Brodeur On Bench For Second Straight Game
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The days of Martin Brodeur starting almost every night for the New Jersey Devils appear to be over.
Brodeur, the NHL's leader in regular-season wins and shutouts, was Johan Hedberg's backup for the second consecutive game on Thursday night when the Devils lost 4-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers.
It was the first time since January 2004 that Brodeur dressed as a backup for two straight games.
Like the Devils, the 38-year-old Brodeur has struggled this season, going 5-18-1 with a 3.15 goals-against average in 27 games. He gave up three goals on seven shots in his last start against Carolina.
Brodeur missed seven games earlier this season because of a bruised elbow. His game has subpar since his return.
