Residents Hold 'Funeral' For Northvale Library

NORTHVALE, NJ (WCBS 880) -- A victim of the economy, the Northvale library has closed.

It was like a funeral as residents held candles and laid a wreath for the tiny Northvale library that closed this week. A victim of the tax cap, it was a private library funded by the borough but there was a deficit and residents voted against increasing their taxes.

Library director Virginia Beckman says the community just lost a vital resource.

"It is devastating that there was so little thought and little time given towards this," said Beckman. "I live in the town, I wasn't happy how the referendum went."

Now, residents will have to purchase library cards from surrounding towns which could cost several hundred dollars.

Beckman says it would take $250,000 to reopen the library.
