Franklin Reyes, 18, complained of chest pains and was taken to the New York Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan emergency room on Friday, the Daily News reported. Reyes was cleared to leave around 9 p.m. when he decided to make a run for it while being led back to a Department of Corrections van, according to the published report.

A source told the Daily News that in spite of his complaints about chest pains Reyes ran 'like a bat out of hell.'

NYPD officers joined the chase and nabbed Reyes near John Street following a 15 minute pursuit.

Reyes faces manslaughter charges in connection with Russo's death.

"He has no regard for the safety of others," Russo's mother Sophia said.

Reyes is currently being held on $50,000 bail in a separate incident in which he allegedly hit a cop and dragged him with his vehicle in Washington Heights.
