Report: Despite Rampant Trade Rumors, Revis Wants To Be Jet For Life
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- On Wednesday it sounded like Darrelle Revis is as good as gone.
The Jets have two or three teams "prepared to make a trade" for the All-Pro cornerback, the New York Daily News reported on Wednesday. Among the "legitimate buyers" are the San Francisco 49ers, flush with draft picks this year in the double digits, who want to make a deal "sooner rather than later," the Daily News reported.
"(Revis is) gone," a source told the paper. "This is happening. They're moving him. They can't keep him. They're rebuilding. They're starting fresh."
The four-time Pro Bowler recently acknowledged that the opportunity to play with the 49ers and win a Super Bowl with them would be appealing, but a source told the New York Post that in actuality, Revis has no desire to leave the Jets.
"He wants to remain a Jet," the source told the newspaper. "He has never asked to be traded."
But it appears that owner Woody Johnson and general manager John Idzik are determined to rid themselves of the 27-year-old and bring back a haul.
"NY Daily News reports Jets have two teams interested in Darrelle Revis," Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted on Wednesday. "This much is known: Jets are shopping him and determined to deal him."
For what it's worth, Johnson, Idzik and head coach Rex Ryan have all denied that they have had discussions about shipping Revis.
According to the New York Post's source, Revis wants to stay in East Rutherford because he loves playing for Ryan, adores the New York/New Jersey area and is incredibly fond of Gang Green's fan base. The source also reported that Revis wants Johnson to lock him up with a long-term deal and keep him a Jet for life, just as Fred Wilpon of the Mets did with superstar third baseman David Wright.
Revis -- widely considered the NFL's top cornerback -- has been rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered early in the 2012 season. The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season if he doesn't skip any mandatory team activities. He'll be looking to sign one of the NFL's most lucrative contracts for a defensive player -- something the Jets might not be willing to dole out.
Trades can't be made official until March 12.
