Reports: Derek Fisher Agrees To Become Next Head Coach Of Knicks
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Knicks appear to have a new head coach.
Yeah, we know you've heard that one before. But Knicks President Phil Jackson looks like he got his guy this time around.
According to multiple reports that surfaced late Monday afternoon, Derek Fisher has agreed to become the Knicks' new bench boss. Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported the contract, though not yet finalized, is believed to be for five years and $25 million.
The Knicks themselves announced that there would be "a major announcement" at a Tuesday press conference at the team's training facility in Greenburgh, N.Y.
Fisher's staff could include Kurt Rambis and Bill Cartwright, with Rick Fox and Luke Walton also in the mix, according to Howard Beck of Bleacher Report.
Jackson had to wait until Fisher's season ended before he could engage in discussions with the five-time NBA champion. After Oklahoma City lost to San Antonio in the Western Conference finals, Fisher said that he was going to take his time before making a decision about the next chapter of his career.
He did, however, acknowledge that he didn't want to leave his former coach -- and other potential suitors -- waiting too long for an answer.
It seemed like a lock that Steve Kerr -- Jackson's No. 1 choice -- would succeed Mike Woodson as the Knicks' coach. But Kerr took the basketball world by surprise when he unexpectedly spurned Jackson and took the Warriors' job.
