Rangers Clinch Playoff Spot As Devils' Hopes Take Big Hit

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The New York Rangers are heading to the playoffs, thanks to the Calgary Flames.

Or maybe they should be thanking the New Jersey Devils, whose 1-0 loss to Calgary on Monday night cemented the idle Rangers' postseason berth.

"Once we know who we're going to play against, we're going to focus on getting a plan together to give us the best possible chance," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said Monday, according to the New York Post. "Whoever we're going to meet is going to be a challenge."

Now the Blueshirts will focus on holding on to second place in the Metropolitan Division and clinching home ice in the opening round.

"It's about getting the home advantage," goalie Henrik Lundqvist said Saturday. "I'd rather look ahead than behind me."

The Devils hope to join the Rangers in the playoffs, but that'll be difficult after Monday's loss dropped them to 34-29-16. New Jersey trails Columbus by three points for the East's final playoff spot with only three games remaining.

"In my opinion, I think we're going to get one more chance (to make the playoffs)," Devils winger Jaromir Jagr said. "It's too strange to finish like that. You've got to believe. It wouldn't make any sense to finish like that. We dominated. Just keep the faith and I think we're going to get one more chance in my opinion.

"We'll see if I'm right or wrong."
