Rabbi's Son Shot During Apparent Robbery In Williamsburg
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police are investigating the shooting of the son of a prominent Rabbi in Brooklyn.
Burech Yida Halberstam, 25, was shot in the stomach during an apparent robbery in Williamsburg a few yards from his apartment building just after midnight Tuesday, police said.
A witness told 1010 WINS reporter Juliet Papa that two men had fled the scene in a white panel truck and that another driver gave chase but was scared off.
Halberstam is listed in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital following emergency surgery.
Community spokesman Isaac Abraham said the shooting happened in an area notorious for illegal drug sales.
"There are more drugs being sold in the area than at Walgreens," Abraham said in a statement. He said this is the sixth shooting in the area in the last two months.
No arrests have been made.
